Sometimes Life is Like a Tight, Itchy Sweater

Updated: Apr 19, 2021

You know the one. That sweater your Aunt Martha crocheted for you six years ago. She made you try it on and wear it for the remainder of the family dinner. You told her you really appreciated it because you didn't want to disappoint her. But in reality- the sleeves are too long, the chest is too tight, the material is lumpy, and the neckline feels like sandpaper against your skin. You saw your mom glaring at you from across the room, insisting you remain grateful for the gift despite your obvious discomfort.

You had zero interest in keeping the sweater. You doubted even your cat would accept it as a makeshift bed. But somehow you got stuck with it.

You feel constricted. You squirm inside the material- trying to shrink away from the scratchy experience while still managing to portray enjoyment.

You could speak up- The sweater just isn't your style. You consider taking the sweater off, but the external pressures are clear. What would others think? Maybe you're not grateful, maybe you're undeserving...

  • What in your life is keeping you constricted?

  • Who placed these constraints on you?

  • When were you told that this is just how it has to be?

  • How would your life look if you let go of others expectations?

You don't have to sacrifice your comfort in order to keep others comfortable.

You don't have to sacrifice your comfort.

You don't have to be responsible for other's comfort.

Counseling can provide a space for you to take a closer look at what has been holding your back. Counseling can give you to tools to break free. Counseling can help you find the place that feels just right.
